We’re Paper Nerds

ready to help you find

THE ONE…

perfect paper stock, that is.

Let’s talk about the wide world of paper and card stocks! It’s a big’un with oodles of options out there. It can be an overwhelming realm to navigate.

More than a few of our customers shared stories of disappointment when they ordered business cards or invitations online. What they got wasn’t at all what they were expecting. Rarely did the disappointment have to do with print quality, it had more to do with the paper or cardstock it was printed on.

Wild Beaver is happy to print proofs on our in-house paper stocks so you can see and feel the difference.

The difference between paper stocks can be dramatic - an 80# text brochure gives a very different impression when picked up than one printed on 130# cover although they look the same sitting on a counter.

Different papers absorb inks differently, sometimes creating subtle differences in the tone, crispness, or vibrance.

A textured paper, such as classic columns or tech weave, creates an entirely different tactile experience than a smooth paper. If you’re after a feeling of luxury, uniqueness, or sophistication, a textured paper can help deliver that message.

It’s #damgoodstuff watching someone’s face light up when they find THE ONE paper that not only looks right but feels right, too. If you’d like some help finding THE ONE for your next project, we’re all too happy to play matchmaker for you.

A Basic Paper Primer…

  • Our House Stocks

Accent Smooth – available in a 60# Text, 100# Cover. Has a high brightness and the preferred blue-white shade for exceptional print contrast with intense whites and subtle tone variations for dark colors. Has a smooth level printing surface that leads to crisp, vivid images. Excellent opacity for minimal show-through and offers an inviting writing surface for note cards, postcards, with compliments cards, and business cards. It’s our house stock for most items due to its versatility.

Titan Gloss – available in 80# Text, 80# Cover, and 100# Cover and 130# Cover. Titan Gloss is a wood-free, double-coated gloss that offers an exceptional graphic paper with consistent, outstanding quality for your project. It has a very smooth finish and offers crisp and bright images. The Gloss is for high-graphic or high-image projects with minimal or larger text.

Titan Dull – available in 100# Text, 80# Cover, 100# Cover and 130# Cover. Titan Dull is our FAVORITE at Wild Beaver. It’s the baby bear between matte and gloss…it’s juuuust right. It’s smooth with a low shine making it a great candidate for items with text and graphics.

    Cougar Super Smooth
    - A very sophisticated paper in a distinctive 130# weight. Really nice colors without being “in your face”; text is crisp and legible. When we’re showing paper samples for special events like weddings or graduations Cougar Super Smooth is usually the winner. It just looks and feels right.

    Tango C1S
    - C1S = Coated 1 Side, making it the best of both worlds! One side is a gloss coat, the other is uncoated. C1S is a popular choice for postcards and appointment cards but is a great option for any project that wants to offer a high impact graphic on one side and ability to write on the other.

  • Coated Stocks

Glossy Stocks are great for photographs or vibrant graphics. It offers a high shine and prevents ink absorption, ensuring images appear crisp and vibrant. Glossy Text papers can be surprisingly economical. Our favorite Coated stocks are the Titan line of Glossy and Dull, available in both text and cover weights.

Coated Papers have Low Ink Absorption. If you’ve ever used watercolors on a napkin or notebook paper, you likely saw the color spread into surrounding areas due to the fiber content. The coating on coated papers stops this from happening so images and text appear sharper and more vibrant than when printed on uncoated stocks.

Can I write on a Coated Stocks? Yes, but with limitations. Pencils, standard markers, crayons and gel inks don’t work well. Ball point pens will be hit or miss. Sharpies, paint, or other permanent pens will be your best option if you need to write on a coated stock.

Challenges with Coated Paper. The high saturation can look great, but problems can arise from folding with ink cracking along the fold mark. We can mitigate this a bit by pre-creasing the card before printing but it’s not something that can be stopped entirely. Fingerprints can also be an issue on gloss stocks.

  • Uncoated Stocks

Uncoated stocks have a natural finish that offer a fantastic writing experience without any shine. Custom note cards and stationary are top candidates for uncoated stocks but it’s also a very popular choice for all kinds of announcements and invitations. Our go-to stocks are 100# Accent Smooth Opaque Cover and 130# Cougar Super Smooth.

Textures. Uncoated stocks can offer a unique tactile experience. Wove, smooth, linen, classic columns, and laid are just a few of the different textures for uncoated stocks.

Wild Beaver has smooth uncoated as part of our regular line, and we are happy to special order any coated stocks for your project. We have samples in-house of different textured papers that are available.

  • Text or Cover?

This refers to the thickness of the stock. Most marketing items will be printed on a Cover, or Card, stock, such as business cards, post cards and rack cards. We carry 80#, 100#, 110# and 130# weight cardstock.

Bond is exclusively uncoated lightweight paper. Typically it is a lower quality paper like standard copy paper or what you use in your home printer, but there are heavier weight bonds that are higher quality for Letterhead or Notepad papers. We carry 20#, 24#, and 70# weight in bond papers.

Text is a higher grade of paper used for brochures, flyers, magazine pages, and thin posters. Wild Beaver carries 80# and 100# text weights.

  • Other Specialty Stocks

We’re only at the tip of the iceberg here!

Polypropylene / Synthetics are plastic based and great for menus or outdoor/wet environments. Available in a variety of weights, these papers are for high usage and easy to keep clean. Some offer antimicrobial properties.

Gmund is a small family-owned factory based in the Bavarian Alps. They’ve been churning out paper and card products since 1907. Although you might be unfamiliar with their name, if you’ve ever watched a winner announced at the Academy Awards then you have seen their products: they supply all of the envelopes and papers for the Oscars every year.

Neenah has factories across the US and abroad and is entirely focused on manufacturing premium, uncoated papers in a variety of tones and hues. Their textured papers offer a natural, tactical, and textural feel with a matte finish.

We have many samples at Wild Beaver available for you to view and can always obtain a sample from our vendors if we don’t have something on hand. Please allow 5-7 business days for us to receive a requested sample.

It is important to note that due to the unique “recipe” of luxury papers, most printers cannot do Pantone Color matching on them.
